Could anyone point me towards an article etc on mushin? I have done a search here on the aikiweb forum but have not found much.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Regards,
Sonja

Hi Sonja,

You can try these guys... http://www.aikidokuwait.org
Send them an email, Hesham Bacquer sensei heads the organization, they are all nice!

Good luck!

The best I know are the writings of Takuan Soho. The nice little edition I have is a translation by William Scott Wilson, under the title The Unfettered Mind, published by Kodansha International.

Re: article etc on mushin

Sonja,

I found a couple of articles recently:

http://www.seishindo.org/articles/mu...hilosophy.html

http://www.seishindo.org/articles/cultivating_ki.html

My best friend just happens to be a buddhist monk. Tthe Fo Guang Shan order is part of the Linji Lineage (Rinzai in Japanese) of the Chinese Chan School (read Zen in Japanese)...

He kindly sent me a manual for zen meditation which I can mail you, if you like.

Hi Ben,

thanks for sharing! And yes, I would really like to read that stuff on Zen meditation. You´ve got our email address, right?

See ya,
Sonja

Re: article etc on mushin

I'll send you the text tonight when I get home from work.

-Just about my favourite part of training is kneeling down at the beginning and meditating. I wish it wasn't as perfunctory as it is.

I've thought about taking the time to meditate before training, but to be honest, I feel somewhat silly about being the only one kneeling alone on the mat

(I try to warm up my knees where possible so that it's less painful: Meditating with aching knees is beyond me)

My best friend said:

I don´t know about Wednesdays (do you practice with Ed and Manfred?), but on Thursdays after the holidays the kids will be back I expect, so the mat will be used by them before our practice starts. Otherwise, I think this is exatcly what the "new" ettiquette on kneeling down is aiming at: giving people the chance to sit down and focus before practice starts. So, no need to feel silly

I would do it with you (I feel the same about this), but I will not be there regularly anymore on Thursdays after the holidays.

Grüssle,
Sonja

I think both the new ettiquette and the growing emphasis on weapons practice are great developments. Robby has also begun doing warm-ups and other bokken exercises on Wed/Fri.

I wore my hakama for the first time last Friday. Being somewhat late I successfully managed to put both legs into one hakama-leg.
I swiftly learned to take small steps. Felt silly.

You'll be missed. Your ukemi & falling techique is an inspiration to us all.

Where is the blushing smiley?!

Hihi, yeah, you´re not the first one to get the legs wrong with the hakama

Takuan is THE word on the flow experience (MUSHIN) in Budo, but Csikszentmihalyi and Johnson describe, analyze, and offer strategies for attaining it more clearly than did the monk.

Flow in Sports -- by Susan A. Jackson, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; Paperback (Rated)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/se...0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

Also,

Mushin, Morals, and Martial Arts: A Discussion of Keenan's YogZicara Critique by Stewart McFarlane, Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1990. (http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/...rs/pdf/325.pdf)

Second in a four-part exchange between dueling scholars concerning morality and Mushin. I couldnt follow all of it, but I did extract points of interest. The entire exchange, all in The Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, is:

--Spontaneity in Western Martial Arts - A Yogacara Critique of Mushin (No-Mind) by John P. KEENAN, 1989. (http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/...rs/pdf/302.pdf)

--Perspective: Mushin, Morals, and Martial Arts: A Discussion of Keenan's YogZicara Critique by Stewart McFarlane (above)

--The Mystique of Martial Arts:A Response to Professor McFarlane by John P. Keenan, 1990.(http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/...rs/pdf/326.pdf)

--The Mystique of Martial Arts: A Reply to Professor Keenan's Response by Stewart McFarlane, 1991. (http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/...rs/pdf/348.pdf)

Also, Plato's Ion discusses it,

Great stuff!

Many thanks...

*sigh* there is simply no avoiding Plato. You think you have gotten off his line of attack and get blindsided by Socrates.
