Re: UFC at a glance

Why not make things even a bit more interesting? Take a pistol with one shot in it and place it in the middle of the ring.

Not spectacular enough and you risk hitting one of crowd. Which would be very bad because we can't get more money from them in the future if they're dead.

Yeah, I say drop a bowie knife in the center of the ring...that'll do it, and no harm to the spectators...

Re: UFC at a glance

Ok, sillyness aside. We've all seen it written here and elswhere that the type of fighting is determined by the rules or conventions.

So we have UFC type fighting because that is what the rules set supports (just like boxing is what it is because that is what the rules of boxing support).

I'm curious what types of fighting styles or arts would rise to the top in an event like the one where competitors were forced by the rules to go all out right from the starting bell and take the opponent out as fast as possible, or lose. Would it be fighting ability, sheer size/strength, a psychotic disregard for the welfare of another human being, or a combination of all of these that would produce the victors?

Ain't hypotheticals grand

Re: UFC at a glance

The only thing that UFC proved and showed was that to be the best you need to know and be great at all the martial art disciplines. Its basically rock paper scissors.

FYI, originally the ufc wanted an electric fence surrounding the fighters and/or alligators surrounding the cage. Common sense said many fighters would probably be injured badly and die so this didn't happen. This is documented.

The first ufc tournament was pretty much no holds barred. Eye gouging, punches to the groin, scratching were all legal back then. Some fake karate experts got exposed and beaten severely. Honestly I think they slapped a gi on some barfighter toughguy. But in the end, gracie jujitsu won.
