hi, i do the akido twice a week thurs night it used to be from 19:30 to 2200 but they have changed it to 21:30 i am diabetic and have been for 13 yrs i got diagnosed on the 10 1 1990 i am now 28 if i don't feel to good i just ask sensei if i can go and check my blood and he says yes also i get of halfway through the lesson as i said before i wait til after he has shown us another move and go up and ask if it is alright to get of the mat to check blod as i have a drink with me on the big courses i eat more cause the excersice with me my bloodsugar goes low so at dinnertime i have a lot of carbs including chocolate and a normal drink in lesson if bloodis low i just ask if i can sit off the mat for a bit then when ifeel a bit better i go back to the changing rooms and do my bloodsugar again and if high enough i put my hand up to get back on mat sensei and i have been doing aikido now for 3yrs as i said on other post should have scrolled down to look at this post firsas i asked anyone else out there tht does aikido andis diabetic now i know but are there any in uk as i feel all alone in uk sometimes

I have been type 1 diabetic for 9 years. I have no pancreatic function whatsoever so am classed as a 'chromic type 1" diabetic - I inject 4-6 times a day depending on food intake. I train and teach 8+ times per week. basically you just have to be disciplined. I do a blood test before every class and have jelly beans on hand in case of a low. My students are used to seeing me in seize chomping on jelly beans if I feel the need and it's simply an accepted part of our training now. I stay fit, eat properly and treat diabetes the same as I would a minor injury or illness - I train unless it's dangerous to do so. I have had many "lows" on the mat but am lucky enough to be able to feel these coming on, so have always managed to top up and be back to training within a few minutes. My advice to any other people facing the diabetes/training dilemma is simply treat it an you would any other incoming occurrence in your life.. tenkan and then do your best to reuse that energy in a positive way.
