Beauty

I have posted this question on the FB page of the St.Louis Aikikai, but thought it is a question for this page too.

Is Aikido an art of unintended beauty? The movements, so flowing and natural, too much so to be by design?

It is the duty of the strong to protect the weak.

Re: Beauty

I think Aikido was intended to be pleasing to the gods, and that is one standard of beauty.

Re: Beauty

Definitely looks pretty when you have an acrobatic uke.

Re: Beauty

Uke is only a small part. The movements of nage are what I notice most. Perhaps it just me thinking of the simple art of movement either in circles or shifting the torso. If uke is too acrobatic it just looks goofy to me. The view of others may vary on this.

It is the duty of the strong to protect the weak.

Re: Beauty

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, someone sees something they decide isn't beautiful, and they say, "That's not Aikido."

Unintended?

More like fully intentional at the expense of other things.
