Rik Ellis, Akido and MMA

Interesting article on Rik Ellis and his training in Aikido along with his participation in MMA.

Clearly its pretty strong stuff yet I think some in here may well find it of interest anyway!

My first Aikido teacher was an old-style judoka (early '60s era) prior to starting Aikido and his son is a policeman who now does BJJ, so I get where this guy is coming from.

Re: Rik Ellis, Akido and MMA

Hi All,
Iam a very good friend of Henry Ellis.I have spoken to his son on occasion. As yet we have not met.
While I am not a fan of mma I respect the people who do this sport.Rik makes some very good points in his article.Quite frankly some aikido is diluted to such an extent that it imo is not a martial art.People who have trained under some of the early uchi deshi of O sensei really received a hard time.Like Henry I transferred from Judo to aikido and let me tell you it was at times pretty intense training with my own aikido mentor. This hard training is slowly but surely being lost, kept alive only by a small groups.Perhaps the younger generation have too many options to keep them occupied? How many of todays youth will spend 4/5 nights a week training hard , travel miles to gain understanding from skilled teachers nowadays?
The quality of some aikido is suspect as are some of the grades some people have,Some grades are self promotions.Ranks such as 7th Dan /8th Dan are growing like weeds in an unattended garden.Every where I look I see this happenlng. What is needed is a new start for aikido.Unless we as aikidoka get back to basics and study carefully the next generation of aikidoka will be with a few exceptions will suffer inasmuch that they may not have any real substance behind their work.Cheers, Joe.

I'm really not the one who should be bringing any of this to anyone's attention... Rik passed away.
