What would you expect from a 3rd kyu?

Hello to everyone,

Tomorrow, I'm going to take my sankyu test. I feel quite ready for it, I mean I know the stuff that I'm going to be tested with and I feel like I'm starting to understand the whole concept and functionality of Aikido a little better. But I don't know how would I be seen by other people,so what would you expect from a 3rd kyu Aikidoka? What to know, how much level of skill? Your opinions please.

Re: What would you expect from a 3rd kyu?

Deliberate and natural-looking positioning and entering; some ability to lead uke; a level-headed randori...

I am not an expert

I took my sankyu test two months ago and the only advice I remember given to me was "relax, don't be in a hurry, move continuously in a flowing manner".

Begin to show more fluidity in your technique; begin to show confidence in your technique; be dynamic while still keeping your technique clean.

Re: What would you expect from a 3rd kyu?

Hello Anne,
At third cue level I would suggest you establish good contact with you partner/check you boddy positioning , keep the movement simple and as correct as possible.Dont focus too much on the final execution of the techinique, if you get the contact /correct positioning and timing ok the throw etc will be a natural culmination of the former.
Above all go out and enjoy the experince , examiners are always happy to see a student who looks happy and confident.
Good luck,
Best regards, Joe.

Keep calm, relax and let the movement flows...
Do not try to 'correct' mistakes you did, just let it flow...
improvize... like jazz music...

Re: What would you expect from a 3rd kyu?

It went quite well except for the first (the right side tsuki of the uke) tsuki kotegaeshi. I literally sucked at that(took a step forward and then did the tenkan instead of just doing to tenkan). I did it well on the left side. I think I'll work harder from now on.

well I'd say doing ONLY tenkan without entry by irimi it is very wrong. It can be deadly dangerous.

Hi Joe!

I wasn't the one asking the question and I didn't ask for the advice. Seeing your 6th dan in the Birankai, I don't mean to be disrespectful and I don't think my advice is wrong. It just might reflect my measely 8 years experience of training under Peter Bernath Sensei. Anyhow, what you stated is inherent in being confident and more dynamic. I'm not saying just be happy go lucky.

Good luck.

Respectfully,

Re: What would you expect from a 3rd kyu?

I understand that self doubt creeps in no matter what. However your teacher is the best judge of what you should look like for 3rd kyu.

He sees you all the time, understands where you've started from, and been there himself. He also knows his own teaching style and ideals better then anyone, and thus understands where you are at better then anyone else.

If your teacher says you're ready for a rank, you have the tools, you just need to perform on the test.

Good luck!

The ability to get through an entire test without getting high-strung and nervous? Well.... maybe someday.

I agree. Being able to flow and redirect energy is very important. I think that during the first two tests this isn't so much a necessity as students are learning the ins and outs of techniques, but at 3rd kyu this should be expected more.

Along with that I like to see students begin to use atemi more.

And I have to mention...I met Bernath Sensei some years ago and he is a pleasant and humble individual. Not to mention a very skilled aikidoka and instructor.

Re: What would you expect from a 3rd kyu?

Congratulations! I might be testing for my 3rd Kyu soon.

(I remember getting hit in the mouth once. I felt bad because I had braces at the time and the uke who hit me had a bleeding knuckle afterwards. Of course, neither of us were hurt and we could laugh about it afterwards. )

Onegaishimasu. In my experience, 3rd kyu is where you get the confidence from taking safe ukemi to begin slapping the mat sharply. In my dojo, we call it "the sound of 3rd kyu..."

In gassho,

Mark
