Re: Testing for 2nd kyu and beyond

Thanks Anne, Your right. I wasn't sure, I apologize. I don't have to worry about that for a while though. I am excited about Winter camp. Where is it and when exactly. I think I would like to try going.

Regards Jamie

Re: Testing for 2nd kyu and beyond

At my dojo, AIkikai of Philadelphia, we test through 1st kyu. Sensei Smith, 6th dan, can award shodan ranks but the thought is that we train to learn Aikido, we test to bring honor to our dojo. It is an opportunity to demonstrate the skill of our instructors and so we gladly and humbly "perform" at major camps along with other like minded students. Aikikai has east coast testing jajudicated by Shihan thrice annually. Summer camp in New England. Winter camp in Florida. Winter celebration in New York. West coast and midwest have similar events. Ultimately, though, unless you plan on opening a dojo or writing a book, the belts aren't significant.

It's in Fort Lauderdale, Florida every year. It will be next February although in the past it's been in early November. But last year Hurricane Wilma forced us to postpone to February. So it will be in February again.

Thanks again Anne, Ft Lauderdale is a fun place! Sun, Beach, Aikido! What more could you ask for in a place like that? I will keep my eyes open on the dates. Hope to see you there.
