As I understood,testing is very much a formality at my dojo too. Sensei said something on the order of 'We wouldn't be doing this if'<organizaation name here, don't remember which, maybe Hombu Dojo>' 'didn't request it.' As I hear, only a few guys have failed tests up to now, and only because they were doing absolute rubbish. Otherwise, it is a matter of honor. You test if you feel you should and you can, and the time regulation is only a 'minimum time' regulation. In theory, after five months now, I could test for 6th kyu now, in December, but I'm not at all sure I will, since I don't even know how to do shomen uchi iriminage properly even if the rest isn't verra hard
