There are also many instances of Ueshiba M. encouraging people to develop their own Aikido. Personally I see nothing regrettable in that at all - in fact the whole idea of Shu Ha Ri requires it.

By not following I am sure he meant those that emulated his movements as an old man but did not go through the hard training he did. Regrettably.
