Seriously, I'd tell him to put more attention to really extending his arm, as if he's pushing against a wall behind your shoulder.
Does that "extension" or "push" involve any actual muscular firing? I'm sure when people hear "extension" they might think to reach
more physically (like straightening the arm). I'm assuming you mean to reach more mentally (so-to-speak), to the point that you really
are reaching, without actually contracting any of the muscles? Or am I off base?
