When you throw a punch with too much follow through, you could get off balance. When you're breaking, the board won't take advantage of that. From my little knowledge of kung-fu, I think that it differs from karate in that the intention is not to destroy with one punch, but to hit 'em half a dozen times before they know what the hell happened!
