Just for a data point, needle stimulation does not actually have to produce LTR in order for treatment to be effective, although that has been the standard model until recently. A technique I often use is similar to what is called superficial dry needling, where the needle is inserted very shallowly into the skin above the trigger point, but not into it, and left in for a very short period of time.
