Fantastic column. It addresses things I have been contemplating for some time, given I study under a much-admired teacher.
In the end, for me, it came down to asking myself whether my actions at any time were sincere and genuine, or superficial. Observing the way others behave towards my sensei, or when teaching, and pondering whether I should copy their actions, helped me reflect upon this.
