The method/link that Tony Mills provided is the method I've used for the past 6 years. I don't think you're going to find a "proper" way, though. You want the belt to lie flat at the back, stay tied and look more or less symmetrical. I've seen a lot of variations that achieve these three basic characteristics. I'm sure they're all equally valid.
