My interpretation is that the get-behind-drop-uke-straight-back throw is of course desirable in a lot of ways, but a good uke (a skilled attacker) who doesn't want to meet mr. floor almost never lets you do that. As you irimi, they turn their attention toward you to continue the attack, and then ... well I really feel that an agressive uke really just begs you to do the traditional iriminage, and I believe that kind of sincere attack is why we have iriminage as we know it.
Of course if they just stand their and ignore you after the initial attack, I agree that going through with this technique feels really contrived. Ukemi like that squeezes all the joy and value out of aikido.
