Normal is a relative concept. Perhaps what is meant is that in combat this state of mind is normal. Be emotionally detached from what is going on, be observant and act accordingly. There is no time to think, to contemplate, one barely has time to act.
Like your kata example where during the steps you get hit; you would ignore it and continue for the sake of the kata. In actual combat you would not stop either, now would you?

In daily life, quite the opposite state of mind is required: be compassionate and emotionally attached. This is part of being human.

So perhaps when you find yourself in combat, it is time to be less human, more animalistic (at least in mind set)

In a real fight:
* If you make a bad decision, you die.
* If you don't decide anything, you die.
Aikido teaches you how to decide.
