If you want to practice something you haven't been shown before, or don't understand, all you have to do is ask someone to show or explain it. It's what sempai are for, and I'm sure sensei won't mind helping you out either.

I can't remember the requirements for 6th kyu in our dojo anymore, but I think it was somewhere around ten techniques, too. It differs from dojo to dojo.
