Very good column,

I agree that this is a very difficult question to answer. I personally don't like the belts, let alone the rainbow around the waist (I've been an orange belt for 12 years in jujutsu, besides being a shodan for 3 years in aikido). I DO think the test is very useful. The actual act of having to put your aikido on display for someone to critisize is both demanding and humbling. The test is the goal, not the colored belt.
