IMO, practicing a fine art such as Shodo along with budo is essential at some point on the journey. We have plenty of precedents!

I recently read an article on this very same subject. Aikido helped him through his barrier he had and what he did helped Ueshiba with what he was looking for. I found it very interesting and even joyful.
