Any manual labour will make the hands rough and tough, there is always Nivea or Vaseline to stop them chaffing
Fishermen pee on their hands to stop the skin blistering, we used to do that to our feet in preparation before going on long forced marches in basic training RN, it works, I don't know how, but it does.... can't see anyone doing that on this forum......
