Interesting essay.
I have found that my visual arts and my aikido don't compete (well, except for hours...) because they fill very different needs. Painting, done alone, involves kinetic energy but primarily exists as a visual practice, and is a way of mediating the inner and outer worlds ("this is how I see the world"). Aikido, done in intimacy with another person, is primarily kinetic and tactile, and (among other things) is a way of mediating the individual and social worlds ("this is how I am in the world").
