Try to see the clip (its on the same page).
I had the same impression but in the clip the attacker actually moves away. The victim was distracted by two others.

i didn't see the video but i can see from the pictures that the victim's first mistake was standing so close to his would-be attacker. are there any techniques where you start nose-to-nose with uke? when you're that close you just can't see a fist flying toward your jaw until the last microsecond.
