I'm currently reading "The Last Samurai: Tales and Battles of Saigo Takamori". The samurai (more specifically the shogun) didn't go easily. The samurai were those things you mention. They were also deceitful, petty, vengeful, honest, loyal, lying, saintly, bastards....just like most people
