Here's an interesting article entitled, "Taking a Swing at Aikido" which details a story of Hiroshi Arakawa, student of Morihei Ueshiba sensei, who helped coach the famous Japanese batter Sadaharu Oh to help perfect his batting swing. Oh later became the homerun king. The article reads, in part, "Using the concepts of Aikido to hit a baseball, however, had turned out to be no easy thing especially when Oh had not been allowed to practice the art directly.

Because his team had been afraid he would be injured practicing a martial art (injuries were inevitable in Japanese martial arts), Oh had been limited to watching his batting coach practice the art. They would meet later and discuss what his coach had felt during each technique that Oh had observed. Neither Oh nor Arakawa had given up on each other or their belief that the principals of Aikido could help Oh master himself and hit."

and also what it doesn't mention

"Mr. Sadaharu Oh (Japanese professional baseball player)
When Mr. Oh joined the Giants (Japanese professional baseball team), his personal growth seemed sluggish. Koichi Tohei taught him one point in the lower abdomen and to stand on one foot with Ki. This is known as "Ippon-ashi dahou"(Hitting ball standing on one foot)"

I joined a softball (like baseball) team while in the States recently. It's basically rounders which is what you play in Brit schools when your PE teacher can't be bothered to organise a proper sport.

I liked hitting as it as it was basically sword. All hips and swoosh - lots of fun :)

Oh and you can drunk while playing - genius :)

Re: Article: Taking a Swing at Aikido
I wish I had read this article when I was playing fastpitch softball in college...

...I would have approached the game in an entirely different manner. It was wasn't enough to have to figure out to hit a ball coming 70+ mph at you from 43 ft, We had to really focus on the mental aspects and self control in order to play as a team.
