Sewing Patterns

I want to be able to sew my own gi's, especially pants, and things like bags, etc. Is there a pattern or book? Where would I find one? I think I recall Simplicity or McCall's having one many years ago, but I can't find it in their books anymore? My daughter has a book on making Japanese clothing, but it is down right scary.

I would also suggest starting w'/ round earth (disclaimer: I proofed the hakama pattern and wrote the instructions). Folkwear has japanese jacket and field pants that are adaptable. ALSO if you can wait a couple months for bags, I will probably do a pre-holiday aikiweb The Mirror column on home sewing weapons bags and dojo bags.

Hi:
I have used the round earth pattern for a hakama (have made two now, and they came out pretty well. I didn't realize that you were involved in creating it Janet- I had thought that Carol Shifflett was the author. Anyhow, I made one with an extended front so it can be tucked into my obi without sagging at the side. It does confuse students who are folding it for me occasionally though. ;)

I have also made dogi pants from Simplicity pattern 8840 from 1988. It is not very authentic, but with a few changes and extra patch over the knee area, it makes a reasonable pair of pants. I've never attempted a jacket, cause I am not sure where to get the material.

Happy sewing. :D

Cool Janet!

I'm looking forward to reading it (and maybe having a go..)

Carol asked me to proof the pattern by making it up, and in the process we totally rewrote the instructions.
Hey, I even got paid for it :-)
