AikiWeb Poll for the week of March 21, 2004:

What do you usually do with your breath during a throw as uke in your aikido training?
  • I don't do aikido
  • Exhale only
  • Exhale, then inhale
  • Hold
  • Inhale, then exhale
  • Inhale only
  • Keep natural
Here are the current results.

If you define nage solely as kake (execution) then I definitely breathe out but before the attack breathe in to concentrate energy and in preparation for kiai. On completion of technique (nage) and accepting ukemi I am still in an exhalation phase - I can't see how uke can inhale when performing ukemi, certainly if nage has responded with speed and energy.

In the beginning I held my breath. With no where for the air pressure to go, I separated several ribs.

jesus that sounds like it hurts. i remember asking one of my sempai what to do when you get hit or get thrown, breathe in or out or hold it, and him hitting and throwing me until i figured out which one was better. ahhh, home.

gleason sensei has really interesting things to say about breathing. he talks about receiving the attack with your breath before you recieve it with you body; that when uke comes in to attack, you should breathe him up into your nose and capture his ki. sounds weird and pseudo-mystical, and indeed gleason sensei is both of those things, but it's also quite interesting and apt.

I've heard different things on this matter:

1) Exhale for ukemi

2) Maintain some air in lungs through ukemi, don't release until completion of breakfall.

Personally, I do the second.
