testing board

Just curious: If you've sat on a testing/grading board, what are you looking for? Or is it all simply an empty formality?

I've been part of the testing board for many tests and in a few different organizations.

Some were true tests of ability and character. Others were to just show everyone what the instructor already knew about the testee. The worst is when you see someone pass, and you know it is weakening the art.

But, I don't ever think it was just empty ceremony.

I've been on testing boards for the last 6/7 years now. Luckily, our organisation has a syllabus and set testing dates, so everyone is aware of the standards expected. As to what I'm looking for, it depends on the grade being taken. For the first grading I look for good body movement, balance and posture. The criteria change as the gradinge get harder. I hope that I will never be involved with an "empty ceremony".

Have fun.
