"When you are an exceptionally good uke, you don't need a shite"
Some people (those from northern Britain, at least) would read this with a chuckle and a shake of the head... Alex |

So I guess it serves the purpose

Liked it.

Re: Aikido against ghost attack!!!
The guy who is receiving nikyo from an invisible nage is the best one. He is wonderfully convincing - starting with the grab of the invisible shoulder all the way to slapping the mat at the end when he has had enough. I also liked the block of the atemi - I guess he saw it coming.
It just goes to prove that there is a deep connection between martial arts and classical comedy. Best regards, Don Hebert |
Re: Aikido against ghost attack!!!
Y'know, I see the humor...but I also see a point. In each dojo there exists bith an Ideal way of doing each basic technique and an Ideal form for uke to attack and follow through. Being able to manifest your dojo's ideal ukemi allows a senior student to guide a newbie through doing a technique with more movement, less talk.

Re: Aikido against ghost attack!!!
Hi Janet - I think you are right and indeed - some aikidoka were surprised that I thought it's an amusing video.

Re: Aikido against ghost attack!!!
Lest anyone thinks I am was merely making fun of the video, I just want to say that I also see the value of this practice. I have also long thought that there is an underlying connection between Aikido and physical comedy - if one looks for it. I believe that people like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Jacque Tati were true masters.
One of the fundamental operating principals of this type of comedy is exposing the unexpected connections between things. Who would of thought that Nikyo also looks like a block with a jo? This shows up quite well (and probably unintentionally) in the video. I thought the video was wonderfully creative and that fact that it made me laugh made it even better. Best regards, Don |
Re: Aikido against ghost attack!!!
Thanks Don - Making people laugh was the intention - no need to take ourseives so seriously. I didn't notice the Jo guy before - well spotted!!!
