Re: Dan Harden April Workshop Santa Ana, CA
Best wishes for a successful workshop with Dan, Gary. The last one seemed well-received (by those attendees without an ax to grind).

Re: Dan Harden April Workshop Santa Ana, CA
Be sure to bring a large supply of carrots so that all of you "aiki bunnies" have plenty of nutrition to make it through such "soft" training.
Good Luck Folks! Marc Abrams |
Re: Dan Harden April Workshop Santa Ana, CA
Hi Guys
I took no offence at Tony calling me an aiki bunny. No need for defense, no need for debate or to respond to his constant derision. I simply offered Tony to try out his stuff... on me. The results will just be more of the same; The people assuming that talking about this stuff equals some ki-fairy in a skirt floating around the room...end up apologizing...and me saying "Don't worry about it"...and we end up making friends. Ho hum.... The internet can make enemies of people who would otherwise get along famously. I simply cannot imagine some of the people here looking each other in the eye and saying some of the things they say to each other...good grief! I just got back from Minn. with Don's crew a whole bunch of MMA guys BJJ/stick/knife guys..... I made sure I ate my carrots! See ya soon Dan |

Well, everyone else is probably out still drinking frosty beverages. I had to visit a friend after today's session then home for a bedtime story for the little one. Had a blast as usual. Learned lots, mostly about what I still suck at. I have pain in weird places and I am reminded that my back isn't back 100%. But I'll be back tomorrow regardless.
Anyway, as I walked by my refrigerator I remembered this magnet that was given to me by a friend years ago. He said he thought of me when he saw it. Don't know what he means by that... |

Re: Dan Harden April 2011 Workshop Santa Ana, CA
A few curious survey questions for people who were at the Santa Ana workshop this past November and this one (Gary, Keith, or anybody else):
How would you rate or describe your own progress since then, based on the feedback you got from this workshop? Do you feel, intellectually, you have an idea what you are training into your body now, and it's just a matter of conditioning it in, or do you still feel there are gaps in your understanding that make the nature of the training's purpose unclear by this point? Relatedly, are you able to manifest the things worked on there now, or was it as much of a struggle as the first time? What sort of broad structural changes have you made to your aikido training to work on the material in the interstice, if any, in terms of the balance of time allotted now to standard aikido practice and bdoy conditioning? Wish I could have been there this time, but alas, there's an ocean or two between me and Cali now. I'll settle for a report or two, though. :) |

So all that said... I'm not really sure how to gauge things. I was grossly under performing the first time out -- it was intensely frustrating for me because I knew I could do better, but feeling like I had an icepick shoved into my lower back wasn't helping matters. This time out things felt a lot better. I still suck at a lot of stuff, but I *think* I was better able to link things together, to get stuff firing in a better sequence, and generally left me with a new list of things to work on. So... In terms of my progress I think it is hard to say for myself. I'd think things like that would best be left to Dan and the others who were at both who worked with me at both -- I think we're all usually pretty bad at gauging that sort of things in ourselves. But this is all good and to me is a sign that I'm learning. I've always trained in this kind of stuff because I'm intensely curious about it. I don't expect it to be easy -- what would the fun of that be? I study it because I know it's hard. And sometimes it's even harder than I realize. That's a good thing. Chaos. How cool is that? Quote:
In terms of my aikido training itself, well, in our style we start out with a full run through the aiki taiso before every class. Integrating these understandings in to how I do every single one of those exercises has been a good thing for me. I see the exercises differently now and I think I get much more out of them as well. I also find myself more stable, harder to move, easier to control the uke, easier to get kuzushi on contact, etc. I've also found myself feeling better doing certain techniques due to all the stuff I already listed. Many techniques take on a whole new complexion. I'll also say that I find myself going more on "automatic" now. Things just happen because that's how it works. And I better understand why it was always so hard to explain this stuff. It just is. If you feel it, you feel it. There you go. If you don't have it, well, it's really hard to explain what "it" is. So how much better in my Aikido? Again, I have no idea -- that's not up to me to say. I just keep training because it's what I like doing. The same reason I go to all these seminars -- I just enjoy training and learning. I feel better overall while training. I feel more in control. I feel I have more power overall. But all that is hard to quantify. And I'll add that I feel the same way about all my training, IP or otherwise. There is so much to learn. There are so many components and perspectives in to these arts. And so many reasons people do them. So... It's all good. Quote:
Hope it helps. |
