Question of etiquette

When proposing marriage, should one be on the left knee so you can draw your sword if they say "no" or should you be on the right knee so a draw is restricted and they have an advantage over you?

I asked my sensei and he said you should be on BOTH knees with a wakizashi and a piece of rice paper just in case the answer is negative. :(

Re: Question of etiquette

Why would you ask? Didn't your respective parents arrange the marriage to enhance the power of both clans?

Seriously, congratulations and many happy years!

As in any discussion within a relationship, remember that you're a man, and whatever knee you choose it will probably be the wrong one.

Keep this in mind. Congrats. I've been married 23 years so have some experience.

As She Who Must Be Obeyed often asks "If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there, is Michael still wrong?" After 36 years the answer is always a resounding "Yes!"

And the tree falling is somehow all my fault...

22 years of marriage...

LOL!!!!
Hard to say since I wear the sword in this marriage - and after 31 years who can remember anymore?!
You could just slip it on her finger while going for kotegaishe :-)

Ah I am familiar with this one. The other question. If a man speaks in the forest and now women is present, is he still wrong? Did a survey of women I know, out of 100 asked 99 said yes and one said I'm not married.

In Jan will be married 39 years. Other rule to last that long, if you have a fight and you are right, apologize!

"One ring to rule them all" ... now I'm getting an idea what that actually means (only 10 years under my belt).

I asked while laying down so bypassed the whole knee question. So far so good.

Well, this is a hypothetical question since she said yes a couple weeks ago. I don't think I finished saying "marry" before she had it on her finger.

I think that's a yes.

I'm so happy for you Greg. Of course I knew she would say yes. You two make a great couple. :)

Thanks everyone. Now if she can just put up with years of me grabbing an arm and twisting it around while muttering "ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, kotegaeshi...." we'll be set!

While watching a demo in Japan this past November, a husband and wife where performing their demo. Person next to me asked, "I wonder if that would be considered foreplay?"
