During your test, when you get jammed up, you.....

This happened to me if during your test you get tangled or jammed up on a technique what do you do?I got jammed up on tsuki kotegaeshi ura and through uke off with a ikkyo type throw .any tips to deal with this.:)

You don't give up, you continue the technique even though it'll look ugly like hell. Most shihans will be displeased if you stop and start because you 'jammed' up.

Good thing is, there are a few ways of doing a particular technique, especially if you've screwed up the initial execution. That is, if uke is still willing to play. If he's gone ahead and attacked you well then, do whatever that comes naturally.

Presumably you ended up with an ikkyo position from tsuki because you moved away from uke's hand (ie the opposite side as opposed to the same side). In that position, you lower uke's hand down from ikkyo position to iriminage position shift your other hand over uke's hand and lower uke's center, then move over so now you are back on the 'correct side' for kotegaishi. Transitioning from ikkyo to kotegaishi is not complex, maintaining control over uke's center needs practice though if you don't want to get punched in the face.

You can also do whatever technique that happens naturally and then do the correct technique immediately afterwards - assuming that isn't a negative thing in your dojo. It isn't in ours, but stopping and trying to restart is in practice and in testing.

Do what you did. :)
If you can't make the technique you were supposed to do happen, at least do something else that is aikido. Don't just stop moving and ask uke if you can try again. (Same applies to class, btw.)

What he said. This is easier with some techniques (ikkyo) than it is with others (irimi nage) though.

During a test, if you get confused, JUST KEEP MOVING. Do not stop! Do something, do anything and, if possible, make it look like uke's fault ;)

In general, to deal with this, just keep practicing or train more.

Do the improvised technique like you meant to. Don't let mistakes show on your face during testing.
cheers

Must complete something. Since Aikido is a lot like dancing so long as we continue to dance on we will eventually find a technique. Stopping when you get tangled up is the same asf giving up and we don't want to instill that quality in our training.

Sounds like you handled it fine. My instructor usually watches me screw up, then simply askes "why was it different on one side than the other...which side was right?" Then he asks me to do the wrong side over again. :D

Don't let it shake you...just do what he says, as best you can.

Best,
Ron

You are right. When testing you have to think that the mat is yours, if you flowed into another movement, that is a good thing. Never stop in the middle of something!
