Why do you operate a dojo?

Why do you hang a shingle and teach?
Is it for fame and fortune?
Is it because you have something to offer?
Is it because you want a place to train?
Why???

At the time I started the Shudokan School of Aikido, circumstances were forcing me to leave the dojo I was in but I really was enjoying learning from our Shihan, Hiroshi Kato so I opened my own dojo so I could keep studying under him. I consider myself qualified only to get beginners started and after that, they are free to find a more experienced and qualified instructor locally.
Best wishes,
Jorge

Funny choices. Who's really going to post and say 'for fame and fortune'?

Although partly just because you'd sound like a bit of a nut ('cause we all know so many rich and famous martial arts instructors, right? I think it's probably right up there with 'teaching art lessons to kids' in terms of fame and fortune.)

Oh yeah, also the fact that I wanted to be the boss and have people bow to me. And because I know so much that people need me.

I don't operate a dojo, so I can't answer seriously, just amused by the wording of the question. Probably unintentional but it seems like a bit of an invitation for people to brag about their humility and selflessness :).

How do you take a large pile of money and turn it into a small pile of money? -> Open of dojo of course! :D

Teaching is a fantastic learning modality!

I wanted to practice 7 days per week and Boston was too far to drive.

I want to do it because I want to rule the world and I need well trained minions to do so. :D

I did it because I didn't find what I was interested in, what I was thinking, wanting to do, how I felt it could be done, etc., elsewhere.

Because I'm a masochist. ;)

  1. To teach under a certain shihan.
  2. To train with my kids instead of having them go to a kids' class and me go to an adult class.
  3. So I can have a class 1 block from my house!

To paraphrase another philosophy I practice...

To keep it you must always give it away. :)

Simply, to train the way I want.

Onegaishimasu. I have operated a dojo for 16 years. Roughly 50% of those years the dojo paid for itself. The other 50% I call 'paying my dues' to take on a mission; to teach aikido and empower people and why? Because operating the dojo is my response to the overwhelming problems of society and the world. Does it work? I like to think it does.

I do it to have sibling souls to practice with.
And to be free to pursue the direction aikido leads me.
