Anyone heard of "Takeda Ryu"?

I found out about an instructor teaching Takeda Ryu in my area, and
trying to research what Takeda Ryu is on the internet produced very few results. A fishy looking international main website and 2 or 3 video clips on youtube.

Anyone heard of the system?

Pass. You can look up comments on this group on e-budo.

Depends, if your area is Northern Japan, there's be a possibility that they're legit. Almost anywhere else, some questions might arise.

Thanks. I didn't mention it, but the fishiest part is that every instructor boasts in 5 or higher dan grade in like 6 arts, and the local teacher claims to be a shihan. I just had to make sure I'm not being martial-racist by assuming it's some fraud.

AFAIK, there was a group, as I mentioned, in northern Japan practicing a sogo budo koryu called 'Takeda Ryu' that had no relation whatsoever to the Takedas of the Ueshiba lineage.

There are a couple of groups in the west claiming to be practicing a "Takeda Ryu" that _is_ an offshoot of Takeda's Daito Ryu. Again, AFAIK, there's no empirical evidence that those folks have any legitimate connection with either Daito Ryu or the other (non-aikijujutsu) Takeda Ryu.

According to the little info I gathered, the "Takeda ryu" here is an offshoot of Daito Ryu and even Aikido, and from what you said I infer they are illegitimate.

Well, the good news is that I found a legitimate Daito Ryu dojo not so far away from there!

Unverifiable style + inflated rank achievement by relatively young teachers...

well, if it looks like it, and smells like it, and tastes like it, just be glad you didn't step in it...

I know it's been a while since this thread has been active. But can someone explain this entry found on the DNBK site?

Mr. Roland Maroteaux, Aikijutsu Kyoshi, Coordinator of France

I'm sure DNBK checks credentials and can sniff out a fake.

Thanks.

Hello,

"I'm sure DNBK checks credentials and can sniff out a fake."

The simple answer is....not necessarily!

Don't confuse the modern DNBK with the organization that existed prior to 1945 despite the grandiose claims on their website. The original DNBK was a govt supported institution disbanded by the Allied GHQ in 1945. Many years later a new private organization using the same name was created. I know several individuals who joined the DNBK without providing any documentation to support their claims.

There are fakes in Japan just like anywhere else.

What George and Toby said. Especially what George said... :D

Thanks for the replies re: the DNBK credentials.
I alwasy knew that the DNBK of today is not the same as the original. But some had me convinced that it was set up by the Japanese government and was a recognized governing body for Budo.
I know of several prominent U.S instructors who use DNBK membership to promote thier schools. Thie rliterature says things like "8th Dan, recognized by the Japanese government through the prestigious DNBK". It was only recently that I was told by a Japanese teacher that he does not consider the DNBK to be a martial arts organization. So this does start to cast some real doubt on Mr. Moroteux. Which is sad because earlier on he did earn real credentials in Aikido and Hakko Ryu.
