Avarage Aikidoka age?

What would you people say the avarage age of all active Aikidokas is? I'm pretty sure it's a bit higher then most other martial arts. Or maybe that's just a local thing. Anyone?

Our Dojo has a fantastic range of ages, from 6 - 60/70's, I'd guess :)

Ta Kung 07-04-2003 12:05 PM

Our avarage age is probably around 25. But we do have some old geezers that are around 60. :)

Ouch!!!! I'm 56, been training for 27 years and I hardly consider myself an old geezer. The average age of students in our dojo is in the late 30's to early 40's; but the range is between 6 and 60+.

Hi mr Ragusa!

No offence intended. I did but a smiley after I wrote geezer. My sensei is in his late 50's and his sensei is well over 70. None of dem are considered geezers.

With respect,

Patrik -

None taken, the "Ouch!!!!..." was all tongue-in-cheek.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
In my experience -
Sunday class in the Aikido dojo draws the "experienced" crowd - I don't think any of us are under 30. At 47, I'd guess I'm slightly over the median age. We have at least one regulars who is in their 60s.

Visiting other Aikido dojos, I tend to feel like I'm among the senior group, but not outstanding in any way.

Contrast this with the BJJ gym where I train on weekdays: I'm the oldest on the mat, there's a couple other guys (including instructor) in their 40s, remainder are teens through mid 30s. Most in their 20s.

My opinion: it stands to reason that Aikidoka are an older group. For a beginner, there's less immediate gratification and it doesn't have as much street cred (or octagon cred...) as most of the other options. But it provides a deep satisfaction that keeps us long-term folks coming back.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
I just averaged our adult class age at 27.9
This number is a little tricky though, because we don't have that many people in their 20's (which is sad) but we have lots of teenagers and lots of over 40's.

I think this is a trend right now (missing lots of early adult ages), because I think we are losing 20 and 30 year olds to MMA, brazilian Jiujitsu and Muay Thai.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
In the dojo I practice the average would be 35.

We had a few young people trying Aikido that stopped coming a couple of months after they initiated. When we contacted them to find out what happened, they told us that they tried MMA practice and decided to stay there.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
I will be 68 in March but I don't consider myself a geezer. Besides the "younger geezers" (20, 25, 30, 35, 40 yrs old) have a hard time with me still.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
If anybody had any real numbers about average age in different martial arts (which they don't), I expect aikido's average would be higher because it isn't as heavily kid-based as some.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
Most of us are mid to late 30's...with the exception of Sensei who is close to 60 I believe. We do have 2 younger high school students that train as well.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
I would guess the average age of a dojo depends on the average age of the populace that dojo draws from. Though I have noticed aikido dojo seem to have kids less often than many other JMA's, so that may be a factor....I see Mary has encountered similar dojo demographics.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
In Tetouan (north of morocco) there are usually very young people practising, mostly teenagers

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
I don't know all the ages but I'd say our dojo regulars are 11, 13, 16, 18, 32, 36, 38, 40, 42, 43, 43, 48, 50 and sensei is in his 60s. In the society as a whole we seem to have a really even spread from under 10s through to 70s, I would guess teenagers are slightly under-represented. There are lots of active juniors classes and many senior dan grades training regularly not just teaching.

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
We don't have very many young(ish) students at our dojo, unfortunately. A lot of kids and then the majority is, I'd say, at least 40+. At 25, I think I'm the youngest regular member, definitely the only yudansha in my age group...

Re: Avarage Aikidoka age?
At the dojo I train, I'm 29, and I've only encountered 2 students that I think are younger than me, one in his very late teens/early twenties, and one I'm guessing is a few years younger than me.
Then we have about 5-10'ish people in their thirties, and about 5-10'ish that are over 45 or so.
