atemis pt2

I found the last thread on atemis to be excellent. However, to focus on a particular area a little more, I am interested, how do you lot teach or get taught atemi? I have noticed that many high graded people do not teach atemi, although when you see them do technique their fist is always in your face!

main questions:

1. is atemi integrated into your normal technique?
2. do you do them all the time
3. does atemi interfere with blending (due to the motion stopping)
4. Do you strike vital points (particular killing areas) during your atemis.
5. Do you allow uke to do atemis during the technique if he is able?
6. Do you think you would naturally use atemis if attacked?

P.S. please note the questions are different from the original thread! (so no need for repeated info). Also, when I say is atemi integrated into your normal technique I mean do you teach atemi seperate (as strikes), do you do set forms of atemi (which fit into many techniques nicely - as I've seen Saito do), or do you just do atemis that come to hand within the techniques.

Cheers

1. is atemi integrated into your normal technique?

Absolutely.

2. do you do them all the time

Yes.

3. does atemi interfere with blending (due to the motion stopping)

No. We practice to show how to integrate the atemi without interfering with the flow of the technique.

4. Do you strike vital points (particular killing areas) during your atemis.

No. We stop any blows to vital areas at the level of the skin or gi. We do not follow through with potentially dangerous blows.

5. Do you allow uke to do atemis during the technique if he is able?

Uke has a responsibility to point out nage's suki (openings) as well.

6. Do you think you would naturally use atemis if attacked?

Absolutely, if I want to apply an aikido technique.

1) Yes.

2) I do not use atemi in my technique unless I have gotten to know my partner a bit. Using strikes sometimes reminds people of scenarios in other martial arts they studied, and can lead to a sudden sparring match.

3) It does effect the rhythm and can change uke's posture. But it does not have to disturb the flow.

4) Always.

5) Yes. Sometimes I have no choice. Getting a polite fist in the nose is a good way to be reminded to take the guys balance and keep it :). Sometimes it's aggravating, but mostly its very helpful.

6) I don't have to think, I know I do.

1. is atemi integrated into your normal technique?

Yes.

2. do you do them all the time

Yes, but the intensity depends on who I'm working with.

3. does atemi interfere with blending (due to the motion stopping)

Only if I choose the wrong atemi.

4. Do you strike vital points (particular killing areas) during your atemis.

Sometimes.

5. Do you allow uke to do atemis during the technique if he is able?

How can I stop him? Seriously, I do prefer if uke shows me my openings and a well placed atemi is usually the most efficient way to do that.

6. Do you think you would naturally use atemis if attacked?

Absolutely. No question at all.

1. is atemi integrated into your normal technique?

- Most of the time, yes, though I don't use them if the energy is "right".

2. do you do them all the time

- No, only as necessary, but I still consider it a vital part of learning about technique and energy.

3. does atemi interfere with blending (due to the motion stopping)

- If I understand this question right: It might, if I want to redirect away from other hazards like concrete, walls, uke's buddies.

4. Do you strike vital points (particular killing areas) during your atemis.

- I have no interest in learning "how to kill", just how to protect myself.

5. Do you allow uke to do atemis during the technique if he is able?

- Only if I know it's coming, or, while in jiyu-waza, randori, henka-waza... I don't want beginners to be surprised, just concentrate on doing the prescribed technique.

6. Do you think you would naturally use atemis if attacked?

- Most likely... I find atemi immensely useful for shodo-o-seisu (control first move). A quick punch to the liver (no contact, but must be 110% believable) does wonders for aborting uke's shomenuchi strike. :)
