Iai
Can anybody tell me if Iai is a part of Aikido? I'm kinda new to all this and researching for college work.

Certainly I cannot speak for everyone but,
I'm not aware of any Aikido classes that include Iai in their curriculum. However, many dojos will also offer instruction in Iai. Usually they are considered separate arts though.... Hope this helps... -Mongo |
Iai, the art of drawing a Japanese sword is a separate martial art from Aikido.
Sometimes an aikido dojo will teach Iai because someone at the dojo has studied it. You can find more about Iai at: E-Budo.com > Koryu Bujutsu > Sword Arts |

Just to follow up on Chuck's mail - Nishio sensei has studie Iai-do and has developed his own Aiki-toho. For some years it was recognised as a form of Iaido - but these days it's concidered a seperate budo. It incorporates the movements of Aikido combined with the use of the sword, and therefore can have a very nice influence on ones aikido (in my opinion :D).
