Interview with Aikido Shihan Kanshu Sunadomari - Part 1

New blog post - Interview with Aikido Shihan Kanshu Sunadomari - Part 1.

" I would sometimes correct their technique, but since I was still a child the Military Police must have thought “What’s that kid doing?”. I would smile - then lock them up and make them scream."

Enjoy!

I'm very excited for this "episode," thanks! I actually bought that friendship demo from Aikido Journal just for this demo. Well worth it.

I know Sunadomari Sensei referred to a change in his ability to do aikido properly after starting his teaching in Kumamoto. He said his ability was ineffective, and he was stopped from doing techniques. But he was proud of turning that around not by getting stronger, but by letting go of physical contention. Something happened between 1953 and 1961 for him, and the founder recognized it (as described in this interview). I hope he will talk in more detail about that period in part 2.....

I'm just about to leave for South America, so it will be a little bit - but there are some interesting bits in part 2.

Another interesting fact about him is that he wrote several books and in every next of them he wrote: Disregard what I wrote in my previous book, I had no clue what I was talking about… LOL

His way of expressing kokyu is somehow similar to H. Kobayashi sensei concept of ‘meguri’. I believe it is not suitable to teach it to the beginners. It is simply too sophisticated and they tend to get completely lost, particularly when they have to practice with aikidoka from other styles who don’t react the same way…
