Testing Requirements
 

Can anyone direct me to a website that lists the different tests and requirements as dictated by the IAF, or Aikikai? I found one once that had the USAF testing, but lost that web address also.

I found a good list of testing requirements at www.northbayaikido.org and I believe they are Aikikai. Good luck

Hate to be an ass but when I went to www.google.com and typed in aikikai testing requirements I hit a bundle of them including most of the major associations.

The problem with the USAF is that their requirements are about 4 times longer, in terms of days, than what I've seen as official aikikai requirements. Their time to test is amongst the longest I've seen.

Here are the testing requirements from Aikikai Hombu Dojo that I have. I'm guessing the techniques necessary are cumulative:

5th kyu (30 days of training)
Shomenuchi ikkyo
Kakatedori shihonage
Shomenuchi iriminage
Zagi (seated) kokyuho

4th kyu (40 days of training after 5th kyu)
Shomenuchi ikkyo
Katadori nikyo
Yokomenuchi shihonage
Shomenuchi iriminage
Zagi kokyuho


3rd kyu (50 days of training after 4th kyu)
Shomenuchi ikkyo through yonkyo (seated and/or standing)
Ryotedori shihonage
Yokomenuchi shihonage
Shomenuchi iriminage
Tsuki iriminage

Tsuki kotegaeshi

3rd dan (300 days of training after 2nd dan)
Above plus tachidori, jodori, taninzugake (multiple people attack), and an essay regarding aikido (subject will be provided)

4th dan (300 days of training after 1st dan)
Above plus jiyuwaza and a short thesis.

These are what is used in what I think is called the Yoseikai association in the Tokyo/Yokohama area under direction of Shoji Nishio shihan.

Interesting, the third criteria has a different practice for women and men.

Yeah! I've been wondering about that as well, but I havent' worked up the nerve to go ask my sensei yet. Anyway I'm going for 3. kyu this sunday, and I'm just happy that I can do the tsuki techniques instead of morotedori, as they suit me better. :D

I guess the difference is based upon the perception that women are attacked differently than men - go figure..... ;)

That would be my guess as well, or that it is easier to do those attacks on women, or a combination. I.e., since women are usually few in number, ukes will often be males. I find when working with tall ukes that (a) the tech often needs serious modification and (b) uke has trouble doing tsuki to my solar plexus area comfortably for them. Striking from above as in shomenuchi or grabbing from behind is much easier for a taller uke to manage. And probably is more likely 'on the street' as an attack rather than a punch.
