Saya for my bokken

Okay Im looking for a saya that can be used for a bokken. The reason Im looking for one is that I am thinking about getting into Iaido but wanna try out some basic stuff first.....so I thought this would work without me having to buy an iaito. Anywho the best one (best price and looks like it'll last, that is) I found so far is the one on aiki.com So i was just wondering if anyone has bought this and what they think of it or of there is a better choice out there.

Thanks a lot

FWIW I started iaido with just a bokken, as did all of our beginners group in the iaido club I belong to. It's not the same as practising with iaito anyway, so I've never bothered with a saya for my bokken. Of course it also depends on the teachers preferences. Not saying you shouldn't get one, just that I hope not having one isn't stopping you from starting...

If you heat a golf tube in really hot water, you can slide it over a bokken and let it cool. It will take the shape of the bokken and costs maybe $2.00. If you want to try iai however, go check out your options in your area. My school for instance has a couple semi-retired iaito that we keep around as loaners for new people. Iaidoka realize how expensive it is to start and generally try to make it easier for new folks.

SeiDoKai in Waterloo Ontario have plastic bokken saya...

Check about 1/3 down the page. I have one of these and they are pretty decent training tools, at a decent price too.

Personaly, I bought a boken with Saya after I already had an iaito. The feeling of each weapon is very different, and so are the uses, the boken with saya is very useful to practice paired applications of iai and some Kata, on the other hand, the returning of the sword to the saya feels vey different.

im a bit late in replying to this, sorry.
to be honest, you shouldnt be using an iaito for the first few months anyways
its also best not to go out and buy just any, as it may not meet the requirements for your style. its best to get your teachers advice before buying iaito.

as already mentioned, the plastic golf tube is the cheapest form of saya. just trim the end to size and tape it up with electrical tape etc.
http://www.ninecircles.co.uk/items.asp?CatID=77 these guys do proper ones, though you may find somewhere cheaper in the u.s
good luck.
have you started iai yet? what style are you/will you do?
:p
