Re: Aikido: What it is, and what it is not?

Hey, thanks for the replies. Its all been very helpful and I'm pleased to have found such a good web community =)

I spoke to a few of my friends who are pretty expierenced, who explained a bit more of the martial side to Aikido. They explained much of it is based upon the transference of power between yourself and the opponent, something which greatly interests me. A few of them said it also has an aestetic appeal, as many of the techniques "flow". The next step is to check out a good dojo(s) in the area.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a good one in the northern California area, around sonoma county? Unlikly, given this is an international boards but ya never know =)

Thanks!

Well, in Petaluma there is (unbelievably enough...) Aikido of Petaluma http://www.aikidopetaluma.com/ The chief instructor has a very respectable background in tai chi as well as just under 40 yrs aikido. One of his students sometimes visits aikiweb; we'l see if she chimes in...
A bit further north, there is a really nice dojo in Graton http://www.sonic.net/~lmath run by Betsy Hill, where I've attended a seminar; ditto KumaKai in Sebastopol http://www.kumakai.com/

Great, I'm in Santa Rosa. There were a few dojos in the area, but I haven't been able to get much information about any of them.

I'll give the petaluma one a call and see if I could sit in on one of thier classes.

thanks!

Here's one in Santa Rosa... The instructor studied in Japan for several years under Saito Sensei at Iwama. That's a very impressive pedigree.

Try going to the AikiWeb Dojo Search Engine and looking for dojo with 25 miles of Santa Rosa, California. I just tried that and came up with 11 dojo including all of the ones so far mentioned.

Here's my "boiler plate" response that I usually give to people who ask how one should choose a dojo:

Frankly, you have a pretty darned good selection of aikido dojo in your area -- even more so if you, say, expand your drive out to an hour or so. Northern California has some of the most interesting aikido folks I've trained with. Don't hesitate to take advantage of what you have by doing your research, looking at a lot of dojo, and asking questions. Once you start, there'll be more than enough opportunities to visit other dojo, go to seminars, and such, too.

Hope that helps,

I'm the Aikido of Petaluma girl chiming in. Our dojo is rather eclectic- classes with sensei are generally about body/mind/spirit, personal development through aikido technique, alignment, intention and centering.Charlie's Tuesday night class are more energetic, technique and martially oriented, and Monday night is basics, with a great teacher and lots of personal attention.
In fact we all get lots of personal attention as we are a very small dojo.
Along with the other dojos that Janet mentioned there is Traditional Aikido in Santa Rosa, which is based on Iwama style aikido and weapons. But please do come visit us in Petaluma, we are very friendly. Also, sensei does encourage us to go out and check outother teachers and other arts.
We look forward to meeting you.Maybe in about an hour...
