Want recommendation for patches

Hello All,

Looking for recommendations from those of you who have bought patches (the little round type, not the type to fix things) for your dojos.

thanks in advance!

Hi Rachel,

I recently had the image seen in my post done by a company called Design-It Inc at http://www.design-it.com. They did a great job. This company also make a lot of the patches for Girl Scouts USA.

Very reasonable, professional and fast.

... Cheers ...

Hi Rachel,

I know you asked for recommendations from people who have actualy bought patches. I have not purchased from HSU Judo Supplies ; they have very reasonable rates (at the bottom of the page). If you go with them I'd like to know what you think.

Hi Chuck,

thanks for the recommendation and the url. They look like they have decent prices, but one thing I would like to do is order fewer patches (they have a 50 patch minimum). Guess it might be worth it in the long run, but thats a lot of students for me to get!

best,

Rachel

Have you tried anything locally? We have a local screenprint/embroidery shop (owned by a martial artist no less) that does all of our stuff. If you find someone with a computerized embroidery setup they should be able to scan in any design you have. Another option is to have the design embroidered directly onto the gi...that's what we do and it looks really nice.

If your not looking to spend alot of money on getting your design on the gi have you give any thought of screen printing ?

Well would also demand a mimimum order. As most screen shops are only set up to work on a flat surface such as a t-shirt they would need to design a specialized screening surface for a gi top, and a custom sized screen, which will bring costs way up.

Also with repeated washings the ink will wear off, leaving an unsightly mess.

In regards to embroidery, if you can find a shop that will do small runs, try to have it done directly on the gi-a patch can be pulled off pretty easily, again, with repeated washing the thread its sewn on with will wear out.

Then there's hand embroidery. WHich . naturally is going to be much more expensive but much more personal. I wouldn't recommend ordering a whole bunch of them to have on hand but a nice custom hand done piece for a shodan gift, or sensei's anniversary or other special occasion could be appropriate and appreciated.

Not to mention it is a dying tradition...

Thanks guys, I will look into these leads. I don't want to have it printed onto the gi though, just the regular 2" round patches with my dojo emblem. Bronson, I will follow up on the local scene too, that is something I didn't think of.

tanks for all the responses!

If you can't find anything local around you here's a link to the contact info for the place we use. Dave Christman is a good guy and always does good stuff for us. He's also the local kendo and iaido instructor and it's always nice to support fellow martial artists :D
