independent dojo? Also, to branch off from that question, is there such thing as a 'superior dojo' and are there specific ingredients (for a dojo to consider) that facilitate ampler growth and improvement for aikidokas?

I do (see stats on left), but it seems to be a temporary situation. I'm fairly new to the center, so don't know the history. From what I can tell, the teach was a student of Toyoda Sensei, but never received official ranking from him or was not a part of the organisation. Not really sure on the details. Over the past year, he's been searching out an organisation and teacher and it looks like we'll end up joining the California AA. He tested with Cindy Hyashi to get 2nd Dan as an independent, and now looking for a formal teacher before joining. From what I can tell, Cyndi was going to be his teacher and then she found out he was 5th Dan in both Hapkido and TKD (under World HKD Federation, GM Myung), so she decided that he needs a higher ranking teacher than her. Anything more than that, I don't have a clue about.

As for "superior dojo" that's really a point of political and personal preferences. The one that is superior is the one with the instructor that suits your prefered learning style and goals for MAs. Beyond that, it's a political thing. Just going to a dojo with the highest-ranking teacher that you can find is not the best thing always. Ability to communicate is of prime importance - no use having the best teacher in the world if one cannot gain any insight from them. I chose my school based on the teacher's attitude and communication skills and wide knowledge base, and not because of a percieved rank or school affiliation.

We are an independent dojo. I just got a writing I did a while ago up on our web site - it might prove to be relative. If you have some spare time, you might find it interesting:

Well said.My dojo has a lineage to prove it, but 1year ago we changed to school that is not approved by others and not believe its still aikido but more aiki jutsu. All members stayed in dojo because of sensei, friendship among us, new style that we like.... It what fits you is the best for you, not what others believe its the best(everyone must try it himself!)

Been in several independent dojos, in fact I'd been in aikido for a couple of years before I found out there were so many divisions. If you're at all worried about your instruction at any time, just visit a couple of other dojos if you can and see if what you're learning matches with what they are teaching. Otherwise, I'd just echo the sentiments above and stay with a dojo that suits you - the teacher, the dojo and your continued attendance are much more important than politics.

David, nice read, I'm definitely still at the shallow end of the dojo pool here...
