Splitting of words (e.g. Shomen Uchi vs. Shomen'uchi)

Hi all,

I've been pondering this for a while and could not come to an definite answer:
How do you split words in aikidō terminology? Is there any rule of thumb?

Some (non-exhaustive but covers most of the naming patterns) examples:
  • kiawase vs. ki awase, 気合せ
  • shōmen'uchi vs shōmen uchi, 正面"
  • katatetori/katatedori vs. katate tori, 片手--
  • gyakuhanmi vs. gyaku hanmi, 逆半身
  • sumiotoshi vs sumi otoshi, 隅落
  • kokyūnage vs. kokyū nage, 呼吸投
  • uchikaitennage vs. uchikaiten nage vs. uchi kaitennage vs. uchi kaiten nage, 内回転投
  • ipponseoinage vs ipponseoi nage vs. ippon seoinage vs. ippon seoi nage, 一本背負投
  • chinshin kurumagaeshi vs. chin shin kurumagaeshi vs. chinshin kuruma gaeshi vs. chin shin kuruma gaeshi, 沈身車"
  • jūji garami vs. jūjigarami, 十字緘み/十字絡み (the irregular kanji for karami, 緘み, is taken directly from a table hand-written by Masatomi Ikeda sensei, consistently on multiple places)
  • hijikime osae vs. hiji kime osae, 肘決め抑え

Sorry for the incorrect characters for uchi, tori and kaeshi, they keep getting butchered no matter what I do...

Thanks, but that's general, I wondered if there are any "customs" WRT aikidō specific terms like those listed in my original post.

Thank you again, this is certainly a valuable reference for anyone studying under aikikai. :)
