The following is on the New York Aikikai website:

"We regret to inform you that due to a complication from diabetes, Sugano Sensei needed to be taken to the Emergency room yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, March 19th). Unfortunately, due to a gangrenous condition and a virulent flesh-eating bacteria, he needed to have emergency surgery. The doctors had no choice but to amputate his foot. Fortunately, he made it through the night without incurring an infection, which was the big fear. His vital signs are good and he is expected to make a quick recovery.

In a week or so, the doctors will need to remove more of his leg, so that they can fit a prosthesis. Doctors say that he will be able to live a normal life, including teaching Aikido. Yamada Sensei and some members of the New York Aikikai were with him last night. Sugano Sensei is surrounded by his family and closest friends.

We ask you to remain calm and be patient until we can get more details. Please do not call or visit yet. We have set up an e-mail address so you can write him: sugano@nyaikikai.com. Messages will be printed and handed to him when he is ready for them. We will post more news as we find out.

Please know that his spirit has been strong and very solid, as ever." Further news: " Today, Sugano Sensei will receive all e-mails sent to him.

As of Thursday afternoon, Sensei was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit to one of the rooms in the hospital. He is doing fine and has no need for IV anymore. He ate food from his favorite restaurant (Souen) for lunch and dinner.

As of 12:45 Thursday, Sensei is in very good spirits and is doing well after surgery. He thanks you for your concern, but asks not to be visited yet. He needs rest. " I, as well as many others around the world I'm sure, hope Sugano sensei will have a swift and full recovery very soon.
