Wakizashi?
Merry Christmas Aikidoka!
I have a small query for you all. Do you train with a wakizashi? Unfortunately my club does not at the moment. I know that we will be taught a new weapon which I think is the Hanbo but no short sword. |
Re: Wakizashi?
If Im not mistaken the usage of the wakizashi tends to be more of a kenjutsu/kendo thing rather than Aikido but there must be some Aiki techniques for using the wakizashi (kneeling perhaps?)

Re: Wakizashi?
Saotome Sensei has some two-sword kumitachi that use the wakizashi. It'd be cool to learn them eventually, but my ASU dojo is former USAF, so it's not very deep into Saotome's weapons tradition.

Re: Wakizashi?
At my dojo we don't use Wakizashi, but we know it, we've already made one practise long time ago with it.
Nowadays, we only mention it when doing some variations of Kote Gaeshi, because we do it like if we were pulling out one of those ;) |
Re: Wakizashi?
The late Yamaguchi Sensei sometimes did paired practice with wakizashi; but what I've seen of that (video of Yamaguchi, practice in a couple of dojo in that line here in the States) was less paired sword practice than aikido taijutsu with a little something extra that made a number of openings much more apparent when done mindfully.

Re: Wakizashi?
We have used it in one lesson in the past year for a weapons practise class that looked a bit like Niten Ichi Ryu practise, I think.
The teacher and some students had a wakazashi, and the others (including me) used a tanto as a stand in. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGh_6o41hRg Takeda Sensei is a student of the late Yamaguchi Sensei. In an attempt to place this clip in context, this is five minutes of one keiko. In this case, the shoto is being used to explore and experiment with connection, extension, intention. (Clearly it is not, nor is it meant to be some kind of blade fighting or defense. It may look weird to watch, but is interesting and fun to feel and practice.) |
Re: Wakizashi?
We have several Wakizashi kata in Korindo, and practice this weapon at the advanced levels (after shodan and depending on sufficient number of students etc.).
