Alan Ruddock Passes Away

Alan Ruddock passed away today, I enjoyed his book "Aikido Memoirs" very much.

Here's an interesting interview:

Very sad news. Another one of the "old guard" is gone.

I have happy memories of spending hours in the bar at BAF Summer Schools in Chester chatting with Alan and his students.

Sad news... So many from that era are going... I, too, enjoyed the book.

Death of Alan Ruddock Sensei

Posted 2012-04-03 01:19:52 by Joe Curran

Dear All, I have just been informed by the Isle ofMan dojo of the passing of Alan Ruddock Sensei. He along with the late Ken Cottier Sensei and Henry Kono Sensei was an early pioneer of Aikido and he trained with OSensei. He was also active in Karate. The news shocked and saddened me. I knew Ruddock Sensei in the early seventies. I wish to pass my condolences to Ruddock Sensei family and friends. May he rest in peace,

With respect . Joe Curran

Heartbreaking news. I trained with Alan a number of times from 2000-2003 until I came to Japan. He was one of the Aikido instructors I was most looking forward to catching up with on my return to Ireland and swapping notes with. I echo Chris Li's comments about Alan's book. It's full of great insights and wonderful photos of Ueshiba Sensei.

RIP to Alan and my condolences to his family and close friends.

As this generation of direct students pass on, we should re-double our efforts to not only record their histories, but to get in every opportunity as possible to train with them.

Dear Marc,
With the deaths of Sugano , Kanai, Yamaguchi ,Tohei [Akira& Koichi], Tamura Senta Yamada Sensei/s to name but a few,its up to the first generation of these men to carry the torch forward.Even these guys are dying off.People like Bill Smith, Mick Holloway, Tom Moss , Marian Mucha , Slim Coyle , George Girvan ,Pat Butler, Ralph Reynolds, Ron Myers,Sensei/s have shed their mortal coil. For myself I am not buying any new cds [might not get a chance to hear all the tracks before the Grim Reaper strikes].As it happens I was scheduled to meet Ruddock Sensei last year but a funeral [not mine , I think] made me miss the opportunity to meet him after so many years. How are you keeping , fine I hope!!?
Cheers, Joe.
Ps Sometimes after a hard day on the couch I feel half dead-hence the jocularity. Each sunrise I see is a bonus.

Memories of a good friend, Alan Ruddock

In 1979 I saw an advert in the paper for a "sports for all" event where you could have a go at Aikido among other things. Previous to this I had studied judo and a bit of karate.

I have always loved to join in and Alan kindly invited me on the mat and asked me to strike him, which I did.

He disappeared and somehow re appeared behind me.
I thought this is really something. In judo there was a number of techniques we learned and that was it, but this seemed something completely different in a strange sort of way almost mystical and endless.

Alan was humble, kind and not aggressive but yet very focused and relaxed when he moved and most of all, very effective.

Some years after the demonstration I saw an advert for an Aikido beginners course and went along. That was over 30 years ago.
I remained a student of Alan's for 25 years until I left the Isle of Man and came to live in North Wales where I set up my own club with my wife.

I greatly appreciate the time Alan taught me and always talk about him when I teach.

He had a great way of teaching me always patient and never flattering.

We had a great course recently with Alan and this gave me a new focus for the future.

Alan was always a great friend and helped me through some difficult times and I will dearly miss him.

Hi David,

Thanks for posting your touching memories of Alan. It's a real shame he is gone before his time.

I hope you and family are well! I remember you and Jeannette visiting us in Southampton many years ago.

Alex
