Is the first belt test about technique?

Depending on style and school, your first belt test (yellow, 7th, 6th, 5th kyu?) is a measure of what?

Is it to measure the BASIC skill of the student?

Is it to motivate the student?

Is it about dedication (attendance) to class?

I realize all of the above might be the answer many of us choose, but if you had to make a choice of the above choices, what would you pick?

For both teachers and students (aren't we all)..

cheers!

Well, as you have said, all 3 stand out for me, but if I had to choose one reason for the first test, I would say dedication to the training.

No matter what the skill level, if you put in the training and time to attend class after class, then you will be tested and most likely pass.

Of course after the first grading, things change. :D

I agree with Dean, all those three are taken into account but from what i experienced it's more towards dedication of training and motivation. You see, we as newbie need to be dedicated to our training, and to be dedicated we have to have motivation to continue our training, and from the first grading that we have been injected with motivation, which made us train and train until now.

First and foremost it's about having fun....

Alright there Ari. It is a measure of all of the above mentioned, with as much emphasis if not more on general attitude, respect, discipline and etiquette.

All the best

It's about being able to protect yourself with ukemi and being able to move your feet.

I guess there's some variation from school to school, even within organizations. For us, the first test is like subsequent tests, just not to the same degree. A student needs to show three techniques, do the ki tests, and demonstrate good ukemi.

So, it's about demonstrating a basic level of proficiency. Technique is a big part of that. Of course, one's mind-set during the test is very important. Our student manual states that the tests should be approached as though they are the last thing we'll ever do.
