Visiting Hawaii end of April - Makaha

Greetings all,

It turns out that I am going to be in Hawaii from April 28 to May 8 (2006). I will be staying in some town called Makaha which I am told is about an hour away from Honolulu.

Instead of spending all my days quietly relaxing on the beach I was thinking of seeing if I could take in some classes in the area.

I don't believe that there is any Yoshinkan in Hawaii but with the success of the event in Himeji I find myself eager to see and experience other styles.

Can anyone give me a contact or a reference to a dojo in or near Makaha that has accepts visitors from other styles? And, of course, if there is a Yoshinkan dojo in the area please let me know that as well!

A look at the dojo search pops up two dojos within 16 miles of Makaha. These are the Mililani Aikido dojo in Mililani and the Pearl City Aikido Club in Pearl City. Does anyone know anything about these clubs?

I am actually going to Hawaii to meet up with my parents and brother so I am not sure how much time I will actually have. I'm hoping that they'll let me out to play though :)

Thanks for your help,

--Michael

I heard that there's actually a small Yoshinkan club at the University of Hawaii Manoa that started up recently, but I don't know much about them. There hasn't been much Yoshinkan activity in Hawaii since Yukio Noguchi passed away.

Pearl City (Donald Moriyama) is a good club, and so is Mililani (Dennis Oka). I train at The Aikido Ohana, which I like, of course, and there is a fairly comprehensive list of Hawaiian Aikido dojo on the Aikido Hawaii website.

Best,

Chris

Thanks Chris,

I did take a look at the Aikido Hawaii website but figured it would be better to ask online for some personal experiences. At a guess, how far is your club from Makaha?

Does anyone else know anything about a possible Yoshinkan club in the area? Any University of Hawaii lurkers out there? :)

cheers,

The Aikido Ohana is a good 35 miles or so from Makaha - under an hour if you're not in traffic. That's pretty far by Hawaii standards, but maybe not that bad if you're used to Tokyo travel times. Pearl City is maybe 5 or 10 miles closer to you, I would guess.

The University of Hawaii Yoshinkan group is just getting started, I think. IIRC they have Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday morning classes, but I don't know if they've actually got many people practicing yet. Anyway, UH would be even further for you :).

Best,

Chris

Thanks Chris. I'll see what I can do. I think we'll have 2 cars by the 30th so hopefully the first week of May I'll be able to make a couple of classes :)

Pearl City Aikido Club

Mr. Stuempel,

My name is Rico Imperial and I am a member of the Pearl

City Aikido Club. If you are interested, please visit us. Moriyama

Sensei always welcomes people from Japan (he's gotten tired of my

awful Kansai-ben). Our dojo's schedule has changed since we

were included in the Aikido Hawaii website. We now have a

children's/beginner class at 5:30 and an adult class at 6:30. Your'e

welcome to attend either one. Our dojo's style is a little different

from the others in the state. We have been heavily influenced by

the Iwama dojo as Mr. Moriyama was associated with Morihiro

Saito Sensei for a long time. Hope to see you come by.

I would like to thank Chris Li and the members of The Aikido Ohana dojo for letting me train with them. I had a great time and highly recommend visiting them if you get a chance. Ahola :)

Unfortunately I was unable (due to wife/parents/aunt/brother restrictions) to train at the Pearl City Aikido Club but I'd like to thank Rico for his kind invitation.

Take care,

--Michael...back in Tokyo <sigh>
