Black Stone

I walk the path - slowly
There is no hurry for the dead
My fingers softly brushing,
Trailing along the smooth Wall
Only the many indentations
Of engraved names
Breaking the smoothness
And, artifacts of sorrow
Left in honor and remembrance

I stop, now and again
Reading names, reading names...
Strangely, I always look
For my own name
My own name engraved
In black stone

Perhaps it is my own guilt
And, my own graying reflection
And, the tears, the tears
Always come, always come
The Three Soldiers
(Are they crying, too?)
Seem to follow me as I walk
Back and forth, back and forth
Fingers softly brushing black stone

I hope that you will take some time, this Memorial Day weekend, to remember the original purpose behind this time and give a nod, however briefly, to our men and women in our military services and to all our veterans out there.

Beyond the Moon

If you could climb over
And step beyond the moon
Would you be any closer to heaven?

The path to heaven
Is measured by desire
Not by linear distance or direction

Our longing is the most direct route
Up, down, back, front...
All irrelevant

Look at what you love
Embrace this love fully
And you are already there

Way of Dying

As we are all dying
Slowly, each and every day
(Well, some do die more quickly)
Should there not
Be a Way for something
As important as this?
A Way to guide us
Through this life-long process
Particularly in a time
Of peace and prosperity
Where a martial code mindset
May no longer apply
Some say that bushido
Is this Way

A Way to live in expectation
Of death at any moment
Actually, to live as one
Already dead
Is there another Way?
I prefer a Way of Dying
While navigating through life
And certainly recognizing death
But, preparing one to live, not die
A Hagakure for life, for today
Joyously each and every day

Shape structures space
Shape contains space
Shape actualizes space
Shape mobilizes space
Space is what is not there
What is not there
Provides purpose for what is

When I move into your space
I capture the container --
Your form
And bring it into the shape
Of my space -
Contained in my form
Two become one
Unity is complete
As is resolution

Control space and
You control form
Control form and
You control space
The shape of an attack
Provides its own solution
As nage and uke create
A brand new shape

Burden of Self

Beware your burden of self
It can block your progress
Forget who you are
And that you are

Focus but do not fight
Let something pass into nothing
And follow that nothing
Back to something

Between eternity and time
The indivisible world
Of the angels - aevum
Where no time is wasted

But we are embedded in time
Moment after moment
Unfolding, each now
Evolving into one long now

Our tapestry of self
Where time is precious
And flows only one way
And answers are few

I seek uke's balance
To make it my own
As he seeks mine
Opposing forces seeking harmony

I seek balance in my life
Coordinating events,
Situations, people, time,
Work, family, practice...

I seek my own personal balance
Searching for my own center
Because I know that life itself
Will not provide one

Way of Nothing

Learning, curiosity, intellect
All must be destroyed
They got you this far
But, now, sitting
You are reaching for nothing
And these will only
Hold you back

Way of Purity

Shore up your windows
And not let distractions in
Nor your soul out
Keep your focus
On your one true goal
Relax, be strong, be weak
And let the purity
Of your desire triumph

Way of Solitude

Pulled from the everyday
To sit in contemplation
And meditate on nothing

Away from others
And the routine world
The Way of Solitude

Follows an irresistible longing
Embracing darkness
To achieve illumination
