The Dojo

The dojo...
A training hall
A place of the Way -
For outsiders a place
Of mystery and promise
The mystery and promise
Of hidden and esoteric
Mystical Eastern knowledge
Of cryptic commands
Uttered in strange tongues
Of information shared only
With those considered worthy

But, stay awhile
The mystery slowly disappears
And what remains is hard work
Sweat, burning lungs and muscles
Fear, surprise, frustration, and, pain
Oh, yes, lots and lots of pain
Sometimes the mat is so cold
Your feet cramp and your gi
Chills your body -- at first
Sometimes, your gi is sweat-loaded
Even as you first put it on
But, the promise remains
That promise of connection
And mastery -- mastery of an art
And of yourself...

So, you stay, and stay
And, sometimes, looking back
You see yourself, looking back
Nodding, bowing, in acceptance
And in gratitude
That the Way continues
Continues on in a place -
A dojo, built for that very purpose
A place of exploration, and definitely
A place of mystery and promise
But the mystery, as is the promise
Is in you...

Nothing is Possible

In the darkness
I close my eyes
And see everything

Here I sit
Embracing the darkness
Fear is a distant sensation
The void is all around
Finally I see, finally...
Nothing does work
Nothing does matter
Nothing is possible
And it is here, right here
All this time...
Nothing is all around me
And in me - Nothing

Going First

Going first
I move into uke's space
An atemi to the face
Occupies his attention
An ura move and I am
Into his blind spot
From there I have
My choice of techniques
No go-no-sen for me
I always go first

Reishiki -- etiquette
As ephemeral as reishi -
Spirit particles
But, just as necessary
To the art as kata or randori

Respect, courtesy, honor
The very spirit behind
What we practice
Without these attributes
We are just thugs

Practicing ways to
Kill and maim each other
Reishiki gives us pause
A bow, a nod, an acknowledgement
That we enter into a mutually

Agreed upon quest, a path
With a certain risk and reward
But, also with a certain trust
A trust that is recognized
In that brief bow, that brief nod

That however hard we practice
We do so under the banner
Of etiquette -- actualizing
The very spirit of the art
Not just the form

You open one door
You close some other one
Hell, you close a
Thousand other ones
Your choice, or
Just let Fate decide

Across the multi-verse
All choices are made
So, perhaps it doesn't matter
Any, and all, choices are valid
Still, you have to live
In this universe
With this particular choice

So, I step forward
Grabbing the door handle
Hesitating, hesitating
Knowing I cannot go back
So, wishing all my doppelgangers luck
I step on through

Rather than just overcoming
Your limitations, instead
Penetrate them, such that
You explore them in detail
In conscious detail

Don't be afraid of suffering
Of pain and failure and confusion
Let your anger and uncertainty
And all your experiences
Guide you deeper and deeper

Into the art such that
The exploration allows you
To come out the other side
Operating beyond mere technique
And transcended in self

Thank You for Your Service

Thank you for your service
I usually get some of this
Every Memorial Day
And Veterans Day
It makes me feel uncomfortable
My service was so long ago
And nothing to match
The most current crop of veterans
And it makes me annoyed
That veterans only get
Recognized on two days a year
Two days a year! -
If even then

Some people may be sincere
At other times it feels
Like lip-service from those
Who feel they must say something
Two days a year
I didn't serve for empty, PC thanks
Though it is good that
Service is recognized, somehow

But, throughout America
Veterans are embedded within
Their families and communities
Struggling with life
And memories and a society
That doesn't have time
Or understand or care
Trying to make it work
Trying to fit back in
Though sometimes the
Hardest thing a veteran
Can do is try to sleep
Through the night!

So, a Thank you for your service
Can sometimes seem empty
Two days a year

Some of you may have noticed that the past few postings have been about war and battle and such, leading up to today's posting of Thank You for Your Service. I hope that you will take some time, this Memorial Day weekend, to remember the original purpose behind this time and give a nod, however briefly, to our men and women in our military services and to all our veterans out there.

The legs come off
The legs go on
Wonderful prosthetics
Modern day marvels
Keeping me out of a wheelchair
Allowing me to do
Amazing things
Like walk and run

Still, when the real legs
First came off
Amid explosions and blood
And much, much shock and pain
(Blessedly, memory ends there)
It was less than pleasant!

Though leaving two legs
Behind on the battlefield
Really, really sucks!
I am proud to have served
But, but, let's make
Each war worth it!
So that as much as possible
Body-bags are left empty
And limbs remain attached

The point of the spear
Needs to trust
The leaders at home
That putting the spear
In harm's way
Is important, has a meaning
For people and country
Not just for ego, money, or

What is war about?
Gallantry or glory? -- Neither
War is about winning!
You die! They die!
Principles aside
On many battlefields
Who dies the most and last
Determines the winner

But, everyone -- on both sides --
Just wants to get home
However, unless somehow we can
Change warfare and people
Many won't
So, on many battlefields
Only tall, rich grasses
Survive and thrive

My fear was so powerful
It was afraid of itself
Fear is the mind killer -
But only if allowed to take root
Sitting in seiza, breathing deeply
Doing four-count breathing
Letting the fear wash all over me

And pass on through me
Slowly the fear diminished
Disappearing, with everything else
Till I sat calm, still, ready...
The call when it came -- hajime!
Found me centered and prepared
Mind clear, I faced my opponents
