Rather than just overcoming
Your limitations, instead
Penetrate them, such that
You explore them in detail
In conscious detail

Don't be afraid of suffering
Of pain and failure and confusion
Let your anger and uncertainty
And all your experiences
Guide you deeper and deeper

Into the art such that
The exploration allows you
To come out the other side
Operating beyond mere technique
And transcended in self

Thank You for Your Service

Thank you for your service
I usually get some of this
Every Memorial Day
And Veterans Day
It makes me feel uncomfortable
My service was so long ago
And nothing to match
The most current crop of veterans
And it makes me annoyed
That veterans only get
Recognized on two days a year
Two days a year! -
If even then

Some people may be sincere
At other times it feels
Like lip-service from those
Who feel they must say something
Two days a year
I didn't serve for empty, PC thanks
Though it is good that
Service is recognized, somehow

But, throughout America
Veterans are embedded within
Their families and communities
Struggling with life
And memories and a society
That doesn't have time
Or understand or care
Trying to make it work
Trying to fit back in
Though sometimes the
Hardest thing a veteran
Can do is try to sleep
Through the night!

So, a Thank you for your service
Can sometimes seem empty
Two days a year

Some of you may have noticed that the past few postings have been about war and battle and such, leading up to today's posting of Thank You for Your Service. I hope that you will take some time, this Memorial Day weekend, to remember the original purpose behind this time and give a nod, however briefly, to our men and women in our military services and to all our veterans out there.

The legs come off
The legs go on
Wonderful prosthetics
Modern day marvels
Keeping me out of a wheelchair
Allowing me to do
Amazing things
Like walk and run

Still, when the real legs
First came off
Amid explosions and blood
And much, much shock and pain
(Blessedly, memory ends there)
It was less than pleasant!

Though leaving two legs
Behind on the battlefield
Really, really sucks!
I am proud to have served
But, but, let's make
Each war worth it!
So that as much as possible
Body-bags are left empty
And limbs remain attached

The point of the spear
Needs to trust
The leaders at home
That putting the spear
In harm's way
Is important, has a meaning
For people and country
Not just for ego, money, or
Corporate expansion

Should our C-130s flash

Bang! You're dead!

So, make sure it is
All worth it and done

My stumps cry out
In phantom-limb pain

The spirits of my lost limbs
Weep and are tormented
Haunted by their loss
For vanished sensation and life

What is war about?
Gallantry or glory? -- Neither
War is about winning!
You die! They die!
Principles aside
On many battlefields
Who dies the most and last
Determines the winner

But, everyone -- on both sides --
Just wants to get home
However, unless somehow we can
Change warfare and people
Many won't
So, on many battlefields
Only tall, rich grasses
Survive and thrive

My fear was so powerful
It was afraid of itself
Fear is the mind killer -
But only if allowed to take root
Sitting in seiza, breathing deeply
Doing four-count breathing
Letting the fear wash all over me

And pass on through me
Slowly the fear diminished
Disappearing, with everything else
Till I sat calm, still, ready...
The call when it came -- hajime!
Found me centered and prepared
Mind clear, I faced my opponents

In General Don't Talk.... Entry Tools Rate This Entry

Don't Talk....

Don't talk
Don't laugh
Don't cry
The things you are
Not supposed to do
In Aikido practice -
But so difficult sometimes

My kohai asks a question
My kohai does something
Dangerous -- repeatedly!
Sometimes a word or two
Can prevent injury
Or save so much time!
No, move there....
Yes, extend here....
No, don't do that -- ever!

Or, when entering stage four --
Liveliness -- of Chiba Sensei's
Five Pillars of natural progression
In the art, the pure pleasure
And joy experienced
Can be so strong sometimes
Spontaneous laughter can burst forth
All on its own accord!
(At least for me)

That leaves the last one:
Don't cry...
Well, I gotta admit
This one is seems so easy
I've never seen anyone cry
On the mat...
Though I did hear Chiba Sensei
Once ask someone he was pinning
If he was crying....and he didn't
Seem too pleased by the possibility
No cry. No cry, he said, walking away

Still, all-in-all, all three admonitions
Seem like good advice
However, on the mat, it is sometimes
So hard not to talk or laugh

Crying though, well, I definitely
Try not to do that!

Behind the Curtain

Stepping behind the curtain
I look back, and...
The curtain is gone
Yet, here I still stand
My illusionary self
Wondering if I am
Just a ghost in the machine
Or, is the machine itself
Just another ghost?
Either way, from where
I stand, I stand on something
Though I may just be
Part of an emergent reality -
Emerging from the amplituhedron?

From my reality
I am very solid and real
Though an atom is mostly
Empty space, it does not follow
That solidarity is an illusion -
Kick the damn chair!
It depends on where you stand -
(On a hypersphere..?)
Ah, back to standing...
So, here I am, an atom
Out to prove that
I am an illusion --
Hold on
Let me ask Buddha

Who Owns the Future?

When critical thinking is lacking
And the public embrace of implausible beliefs
Creates a context of credulity
When the psychopathology
Of the fundamentalist remains unchallenged
When injustice becomes law
When simple truth is considered treason -
Or, heroism....or, even heretical
When people of good will
Keep quiet and stand aside
Then society is in trouble
Then, what is left?
What can be done?
Who will do it?

We can look at the past
We can look at the present
We can look at Authority
In all its guises
We can look deep within ourselves
Can we then see the future?
What do we see?
What do we want to see?
Each of us must do their part
Each of us, every day, must stand up
Stand up and say no!
No, not here! No, not now! No, not ever!
This is when defiance becomes duty!
And civil disobedience becomes a responsibility
If not an obligation!
This is when we determine
Who owns the future?

Is This Enough?

As Don Juan said:
All paths are the same -
they lead nowhere

If this is true, then
Why travel any Path at all?
Why take on all the
Pain and suffering
Each path may ask of you?

Perhaps it's the landscape
Along the way: beautiful
And breathless, enthralling
Though, at times bitter hard
Is this enough?
Is this enough to get
Past all the hardship
All the despair?

This, I keep asking myself
As I sometimes fly
Sometimes crawl along
A hard-scrabble ground
And see my loved ones perish
Sometimes hearing my heart break
As I move along my chosen path
And I ask: Is this enough?

In Death Ground

In death ground - fight!
So goes the saying
When all cleverness
And strategy has failed
And the enemy
Has the high ground
Metaphorically or physically

Where rational thought
Wisdom has no place
Fight - irrationally, recklessly
Attack! Attack! Attack!
Even if you die
Remember, this is
Death ground!
Perhaps for both!
